Why I don’t use Affirmations and use Mantras to feel better.

First, what the heck is a Mantra?!

Well it is like an affirmation. I phrase we can repeat to ourselves over and over, like:

I AM beautiful. I AM abundant. I AM loved.

These above are affirmations. What I don’t like about affirmations and why I stopped using them is that at the core I didn’t believe them. I was using them to “fake it until I make it.” I was using them to convince myself of something I was resisting. A belief I didn’t believe.

Well, that doesn’t work. Using affirmations we don’t believe DOES NOT WORK.

That isn’t how manifestation works and that is not how the Universe responds to us. The Universe doesn’t connect or respond to our words. The Universe responds to our vibration. When I say, “I AM wealthy, rich, abundant, beautiful “…etc and I see and know I am not, then I will not create wealth.

Or let’s try this one, it may be easier to feel or resonate with. “I AM Calm. I AM Peace.” However, if we are saying this in the middle of chaos and we are using it to get to calm it will not work. We are manipulating and are trying to convince ourselves. If we know ahead of time and have been practicing calm and peace AND we truly believe we are then we will create Peace and Calm around us.

So, what do I use instead?

A Mantra. For me a Mantra is more general, less personal. The practice of using Mantra’s is originally from Buddhism and Hinduism and are words or sounds repeated to aid concentration in meditation.

For me, it is a phrase or sound that I can connect to and have NO resistance with. When I say no resistance, I mean truly believe this thought and there is no doubt. Like, “I create peace that surrounds me.” I am not convincing myself that I AM total all encompassing Peace. I know and believe that I can create peace around me and know that when there is chaos instead, I created that too.

How to create your own Mantra

I have found a love for writing and using the power of words to connect to my soul.

I was reading my journal and noticed a theme over the I had been vacationing I Baja, Mexico. As I skimmed my journal I saw words and phrases that I wrote jump out at me, calling me. So I took these phrases and strung them together is a longer format of a Mantra. Here is what I created:

I wind my way through the world, releasing what is not mine.
I am the witness of creation unfolding.
I silence the concepts and ideas of what must be, I am present to what is beginning.
I return to stillness.
As I become the boundless waters of the grandmother ocean, cleansing, restoring, rebirthing.
I am free. I am free. I am free.
With gratitude in my heart and peace in my mind, I am free.

Your Turn

  1. See what you have already written
    • If you write in a journal, skim your journal to see if anything pops off the page. Does it feel empowering? Do you believe it and know it in your heart.
  2. Go onto Google and look up Mantras. Check out some that have already been created. Follow what satisfies you.
  3. Ask your Inner Being, your Soul, God for guidance. For a phrase.
  4. Here is a list of a few of my favorites.
    • I am loving awareness
    • I trust the truth will show me the way
    • Everything is working out for me
    • I create the peace that surrounds me
    • The Universe/God is conspiring with me
    • Om So Hum
    • Amen
    • Hallelujah
    • Om

Have fun with this practice and see what comes up for you. If there is a phrase that feels weird, just notice it and maybe there is a gift in the phrase for you. A story or belief you have about yourself and the world that may not be serving you.

I would love to know what your favorite Mantra is, please feel free to add yours to the comments for others to see too.
